Nestlé USA Completes Removal of Artificial Food Dyes from Products
Nestlé USA has officially completed the removal of certified artificial Food, Drug, and Cosmetic (FD&C) colors from its entire U.S. product lineup, which marks a significant step in the brand's commitment to clean-label products. The reformulation affects core brands such as Nesquik and the company's extensive dairy and beverage lines.
The transition is part of a broader response to evolving regulatory standards and consumer preferences for transparency in food ingredients. Over several months, Nestlé's research and development teams worked to replace synthetic dyes with natural alternatives, ensuring that the flavor profiles, visual traits, and textures of its iconic brands remain unchanged.
Particular focus was placed on the Nesquik product line, where synthetic dyes in strawberry-flavored products were replaced entirely with plant-based coloring sources. Additionally, the company's foodservice segment underwent a five-month overhaul to transition more than 20 Nestlé Vitality beverage offerings to natural color equivalents.
According to Nestlé USA CEO Marty Thompson, this portfolio transformation was a decade-long process aimed at enhancing ingredient transparency and simplifying recipes. As part of this initiative, Nestlé has also reduced the use of high-fructose corn syrup to less than 1% of its offerings, while expanding its natural dairy creamer brands such as Natural Bliss.
This development places Nestlé at the forefront of industry efforts to comply with clean-label demands, as other companies like General Mills and Kraft Heinz are also working towards similar goals. The successful rollout underscores the feasibility of achieving full clean-label compliance at scale within the industry.
The shift highlights the necessity for food manufacturers to invest in advanced natural ingredient technologies to maintain market access and meet future regulatory expectations.
